Telephone Interview 101

The main objective of a phone interview is for you to try and do well and get invited in for a site visit. It is a serious first step in the process. If you do not wish to pursue the opportunity do not express that during the phone interview – keep the interview positive – we can always bow you out gracefully after the call. Phone interviews are not convenient, not simple, and not easy! The challenge of the phone interview is to convey enthusiasm without the benefit of body language. A phone interview is different than a face-to-face meeting because there is no seeing the other person. All they have to go on is what you say and how it is said. They do not see your warm smile or your nice suit or the nodding of your head in agreement. So not only must you say the right things but you must also say them with true feelings. They will know if there is no enthusiasm in your voice. A phone interview is a very real first interview. This will be the client’s first impression of you. Be on time and if at all possible in an area where you will not be distracted and use a landline. Avoid background sounds and street noise! Be prepared!

Here are the 8 simple steps to remember:
1. Please have your CV in front of you, so you can refer to it easily
2. Please have a pen and paper handy to take notes.
3. Remember to be very enthusiastic and positive about their position and your skills.
4. Please review the job description prior to the interview and place it in front of you.
5. Please visit the client’s website so you can be informed when you speak to them.
6. Please prepare an organized synopsis of what you have done to get to this point in your career.
7. Please have your availability (multiple days and times) for a face-to-face meeting.
8. Please be sure to call me after and let me know your thoughts and impressions. I will not speak to the client unless I speak with you first.
